Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

As any prominent honors show approaches, you'll find an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • Well-received sorting experience was overlooked that year
  • Just some brain-teasers barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles in the world continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
